EU official: US may soften their stance on Paris pact

United States President Donald Trump may be ready to soften his stance on the Paris climate accord, the EU top climate official Miguel Arias Canete said.

Trump announced in June that he was abandoning the 2015 deal, drawing worldwide criticism as the US are the world’s second biggest producer of greenhouse gases after China. He then said he wanted to renegotiate the agreement that was signed by every nation except Nicaragua and Syria.

Now, however, the US “stated that they will not renegotiate the Paris Accord, but they try to review the terms on which they could be engaged under this agreement,” Canete said, WSJ reported. European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy added that there will be a meeting with American representatives on the sidelines of next week’s UN General Assembly to assess the “real US position.”
