Spain orders prosecution of Catalan mayors

Spain's state prosecutor has ordered a criminal investigation of more than 700 Catalan mayors under the suspicion of supporting the independence referendum scheduled for October 1, Russia Today reported on Wednesday.

Last week, the Catalan Parliament passed a law to hold an independence referendum that would separate the autonomous province from the Kingdom of Spain. However, the official Spanish government considers the scheduled independence vote to be illegal, announcing last week that the members of the parliament who voted in favor of the bill will face criminal charges.
