European stocks finish mixed as oil surges

Equities in Paris and Frankfurt rebounded from slight losses and ended the session on Wednesday modestly in the green, while the blue chips on the London Stock Exchange remained below the flat line as bearish sentiment spread to the markets in the United States. 

The FTSE 100 edged 0.28% lower, as miners soured the overall valuation. Gold producers Antofagasta and Fresnillo tumbled 3.96% and 3.62%, respectively, as the yellow metal was down 0.72% at $1,322.41 per ounce at 5:50 pm CET. The DAX moved 0.23% to positive territory, particularly helped by Merck, the best performer, which rose 1.97%. The French CAC 40 closed just 0.16% up, led by Vivendi's gain of 2.78%.

The euro lost 0.6% to trade at $1.18948 at 5:50 pm CET, and ticked 0.1% down to £0.9. Sterling fell 0.5% to $1.3217. West Texas Intermediate Oil jumped 1.45% to $48.93 per barrel at 5:41 pm CET at ICE Futures Europe, and Brent added 1.11% to sell for $54.87 for one barrel.
