DHS sued over warrantless searches

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation are suing the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) over warrantless searches at the US border.

The organizations have announced on Wednesday that they have filed a lawsuit against the DHS on behalf of 11 travelers who had their phones and laptops searched without warrants, which could be considered a violation of the First and Fourth amendments of the US Constitution.

“Because government scrutiny of electronic devices is an unprecedented invasion of personal privacy and a threat to freedom of speech and association, searches of such devices [phones, laptops] absent a warrant supported by probable cause and without particularly describing the information to be searched are unconstitutional,” the complaint states.
