Report: WH official person of interest in Russia probe

A current official at the White House is “a significant person of interest” in the investigation into possible collusion between members of United States President Donald Trump’s campaign team and Russian officials, the Washington Post reported on Friday citing people familiar with the matter.

According to the report, the person in question is “someone close” to President Trump, allegedly indicating that the Russia probe reaches higher levels of government. The investigation itself is about to accelerate as well, the sources added, as more interviews are conducted and subpoenas issued. However, this does not mean that the probe is reaching its conclusion, they underscored.

The report also suggests that investigators are still looking into former members of Trump’s campaign and transition teams, including former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, both of whom worked as lobbyists for foreign officials.

The Justice Department recently appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller to lead the investigation into possible Russian meddling with the US presidential election and "related matters."
