Scott Pruitt confirmed as EPA administrator

The United States Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works voted by 52 against 46 votes on Friday to confirm Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruit's nomination to head the Environmental Protection Agency. The Republican majority closed ranks and prevailed after tense hearings, where Democratic lawmakers have boycotted the process and called for delays.

Pruitt was grilled in the upper chamber of Congress for his record as climate change skeptic and his connections to the fossil fuel industry. President Donald Trump's pick is also known for criticizing environmental policies and regulations. Eventually, two Democrats – Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, vowed to accept the nomination, while the Grand Old Party's Susan Collins of Maine said she would vote against his confirmation as EPA administrator.
