Erdogan: No peace without Palestine independence

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Tuesday that the only way to ensure peace in the Middle East is to give Palestine independence, Anadolu Agency reported.

Erdogan claimed the conflict in the region will not be resolved until the Palestinian people have their own country with borders as they were before 1967 when Israel occupied the state.

Turkey’s relations with Palestine have been strong and have improved since Erdogan came to power. In 2012, Ankara supported the proposal for Palestine being upgraded to the status of a United Nations non-member observer state, which meant the organization recognized it as a state.

Israel and Turkey re-established diplomatic relations in July 2016 following the failed attempt to overthrow Erdogan. The two countries had ceased relations after Israel prevented the Turkish ship, MV Mavi Mamara, from reaching the Gaza strip in 2010 which resulted in the deaths of ten people.
