Juncker: Reinstating death penalty end of EU, Turkey negotiations

Reintroducing the death penalty in Turkey would mark the end of the country’s European Union membership negotiations, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told German newspaper Bild on Sunday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country could reinstate the death penalty, which was abolished in 2004, following the April referendum. The issue of reintroducing capital punishment arose after the coup attempt last year.

Tensions between the EU and Turkey have been on the rise as well since the failed coup due to the government purge in the country that sought to solidify its control over the nation’s military, police, media, education and court system.
