New suspect in Paris shooting turns himself in to police

A second suspect sought in the aftermath of an attack in Paris, which left one police officer dead and seriously injured two others, turned himself in to Belgian authorities on Friday, AFP reported. The suspect is considered to be a potential accomplice in the shooting that occurred on the Champs-Elysees avenue in central Paris.

Meanwhile, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the incident. According to local media, the alleged gunman, a French national, was previously known to authorities as an extremist and was under surveillance by the country's security services. His home in an eastern suburb of Paris was raided during the night.

The shooting, which occurred during a televised debate between French presidential candidates last night, took the spotlight in the final days prior to Sunday's election, while conservative candidate Francois Fillon called for the suspension of campaigning following the incident.
