Newly appointed French defense minister resigns

Recently appointed French Minister of the Armed Services Sylvie Goulard (pictured) announced her resignation on Tuesday amid an ongoing investigation into alleged misuse of European Parliament funds by members of the Democratic Movement (MoDem). Goulard, a former member of the European Parliament from MoDem, was appointed defense minister by President Emmanuel Macron after the election in May. In a statement, she asked not to be considered as part of the new government due to the controversy, which she believes would overshadow the president's cabinet and her duty.

Prosecutors in Paris opened the inquiry into the alleged abuse after a former member of MoDem, whose leader is Macron’s justice minister Francois Bayrou, testified that he received money as an assistant to a member of the European Parliament, but never did any real work for him.

Minister of Territorial Cohesion and close ally to the French president, Richard Ferrand resigned earlier following allegations of nepotism.
