Putin wishes Iraq luck in Mosul operation

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin wished Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi success in retaking the city of Mosul from the Islamic State when the two spoke over the phone on Wednesday, AFP reported citing Kremlin.

In addition to his conversation with al-Abadi and expressing hope that Iraqi forces achieve “complete success in their objectives,” Putin also discussed the matter with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a separate phone call. No details were given on the content of that conversation.

On Monday, Iraq began a mission backed by the United States to recapture Mosul, which was taken by ISIS in 2014 and is the organization’s last major stronghold in the country. Turkey said it will not withdraw its troops from Iraq, in spite of Iraq’s government claiming the Turkish forces were not given permission to take part in the Mosul operation.
