Russia calls US to respect Syria's sovereignty

After the military coalition led by the United States downed a Syrian government's warplane, Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted on Monday by warning against the use of force against the troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. Escalation must be prevented, Deputy Minister Sergey Ryabkov told Interfax. He added he would meet Thomas Shannon, US under secretary of state for political affairs, in St. Petersburg on June 23 for talks on bilateral issues.

Earlier, Minister Sergey Lavrov called counterparts in Washington to respect Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to coordinate actions "on the ground" with the government in Damascus, in the spirit of the Astana process Russia launched with Turkey and Iran. The next meeting is scheduled for July 10, the country's top diplomat added.
