Syria still has chemical weapons, Mattis claims

United States Secretary of Defense General James Mattis (pictured right) said on Friday that Syria still has chemical weapons despite the 2014 US-Russia agreement with Damascus to have its stockpiles destroyed and overseen by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Speaking in Tel Aviv alongside Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman (pictured left), Mattis also told reporters that Syria might be concerned about additional US strikes in wake of the cruise missile attack ordered by President Donald Trump as a retaliatory measure following the alleged sarin attack in Idlib.

Earlier this week, the OPCW stated it had found traces of the nerve agent sarin during its investigation in the Syrian town of Khan Shaykhun where the attack that killed some 80 people occurred. Russia criticized the organization’s findings, claiming that no members of the White Helmets were harmed during the attack despite being present in the town at the time of the incident.
