Syrian army breaks three-year siege of Deir ez-Zor

The Syrian government forces and its allies broke the siege in Deir ez-Zor city on Tuesday, according to reports of state media. The Islamic State had imposed siege of the city almost three years ago. The part of the Syrian army that has advanced from the west in the past few days has met the part of government troops that has been defending the city.

Earlier today, Russian warship fired missiles at a group of jihadists located near the seventh-largest Syrian city from its position in the Mediterranean Sea.

Retaking of Deir ez-Zor would represent an important part of a fight against ISIS mostly because of its strategic position. The liberation of the largest city in eastern Syria would leave Islamic State members surrounded in the center of Syria with Raqqa remaining as their only stronghold.
