Trump rejects Maduro's phone call request until 'democracy is restored''

United States President Donald Trump retweeted his social media chief, Dan Scavino Jr., about Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro asking to talk with Trump over the phone.

"Today, Nicolas Maduro requested a phone call with @POTUS @realDonaldTrump. Here is a statement by the Press Secretary on #Venezuela," Scavino tweeted and included the press secretary's statement.

The US press secretary's office accused Maduro of opting for the "path of dictatorship" and refusing to "heed" Trump's call to "respect Venezuela's constitution, hold free and fair elections," as well as to stop "human rights violations" and "release political prisoners." According to the statement, Trump will accept a phone conversation with Maduro once "democracy is restored" in the South American country.

Earlier, Trump claimed the US may consider a military intervention in Venezuela "if necessary."
