Trump’s Cohn clashes with IMF, World Bank over trade

US President Donald Trump’s administration wants to tax imports from those countries that put tariffs on US products, Gary Cohn, director of Trump’s National Economic Council, said on Thursday.

Speaking to bankers from the International Monetary Fund and World Bank gathered at their spring meetings in Washington, Cohn said, “Fair means we treat our trading partners the way they treat us.”

Asked what about his message for his international counterparts, Cohn said, “If you want to insist on having a tariff on a product, which we prefer you not, the president believes that we should treat you in a reciprocal fashion and that we should tax your product coming into the United States.”
